Behavioural Screening
Screening for behavioural concerns is an important component of every veterinary wellness exam. In some cases, pets may require a more in depth consultation in regards to their behaviour. We can help with frustrating behaviour issues or questions such as: pre-adoption consultations, new pets in the household, house soiling, anxiety, sound phobias, separation anxiety, aggression, destructive scratching and more. A thorough history of the problem and physical exam of your pet will assist us in differentiating between a behaviour problem and a medication condition, as many behaviour issues have a physical aspect as well. Once medical causes have been ruled out, we can assist with solutions to solve the unwanted behaviour. We have a wide variety of resources available including an experienced dog trainer on staff.
What to Expect During a Behaviour Consult
Prior to the consultation, we will send a questionnaire with questions about your pet and their lifestyle. The consultation will take place here at our clinic or may be available virtually, we may ask additional questions or make recommendations at that time. You are welcome to bring your pet to the appointment, but in many cases this is not required pending their recent medical history. After the consultation you will receive an email regarding possible treatment options, management strategies, and additional resources for you and your pet. Nutraceuticals and medication options may be discussed as well. We will follow up over the following months to ensure things are progressing as expected.
Please Note
Black Creek Animal Hospital does not have a board certified veterinary behaviour specialist on staff, but we have a veterinarian and registered veterinary technician with special interests and training in behaviour. If your pet is experiencing more severe behavioural concerns, we may recommend external referral to a board certified behaviorist in some cases.
